The mother-of-pearl lacquer ware, originated in Jishan, is one traditional craftsmanship. Craftsmen usually choose natural Chinese lacquer, (soft/hard) mother-of-pearl lacquer, gold, silver, wood, paper as raw materials and make it with elaborate processes including Model-making, a protective layer of lacquer paste, gold inlaid work, reduplicative lacquer, mother-of-pearl lacquering, polishing in water and manually refining.

The mother-of-pearl lacquer inlay skill has long been used since the Western Zhou Dynasty. It was regarded as gifts contributing to emperors and royal families in different dynasties. Bai Juyi, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, spoke highly of its gorgeous and luxurious appearance in his poem “Supingyao”.
