Situated at the Loess Plateau zone of the middle Yellow River, Pinglu County is shown as higher northern and lower southern terrain. It forms a long and narrow sunny slope ranging from the peak of the Zhongtiaoshan Range till the shoreside of the Yellow River. With the profusion of sunlight and large temperature difference, its tight soil structure,which mainly made of clayey soil layer is quite proper for constructing earth construction. The peculiar geographical environment and climatic conditions offer the favorable geologic setting for building cave dwelling courtyards. Meanwhile, the area of the Loess Plateau lacks rain always with drought prevailing almost every year. The temperature differs relatively substantially at all seasons. And also its underground water level is usually below 30 to 40 meters. All of these provide a dry and comfortable living condition for establishing cave dwelling courtyards which consist of typical cave-dwelling houses presenting features of the Yellow River and local customs of the Loess Plateau. It gains high reputation of “the underground quadrangle courtyards of northern China ”. As long as 4000 years ago, although the lack of constructing materials, our ancestors, residing around the Yellow River area, fully used the unique climatic feature of the Loess Plateau and its well-proportioned, cementing-property and up-right characteristic of the soil. They dug caves to dwell and created the distinct dwelling style of the cave dwelling courtyards.
